2009 Tampa Bay Bucs Preview

This article is off the topic that this blog is based on. I decided to type this article because I am tired of hearing how bad the Bucs will suck this year and lets take a look at the positives! ---->

With Gruden no longer in the picture, you can expect to see some real football played. Gruden did take us to the promise land and left us with some great memories, along with a deflated west coast offense that we have called football for too many years. With all of the off season moves made by the new staff, it looks like we can get ready for some smash mouth football!

Running Game
As of right now the RB position is looking healthy. The Bucs have 6 RBs on the roster and all of them can play ball. You can expect to see a fair share of Graham and Ward sharing the running back roll throughout the season, both players are 29 years old, 5'8/5'9 and right about 225lbs. With Ward being the faster of the two and Graham with more power, you can expect 1000+ combined yards from these two . Three younger players are battling for their spot on the roster as well. I am sure 2 of the 3 players will make the roster, but I am not sure if they will get a running back roll as of yet. We will have to see how they preform on the field. With the hopes that the Bucs go with a smash mouth style, keep an eye on John Vaughn a rookie out of Richmond. This kid is big, 6'0 232lbs., only 22 years old and has the possibility to fill the much needed void of a big back for short yardage situations. Carnell Williams is still on the roster, but will most likely be traded and that is not a bad thing. Other sources say he will start if healthy... we will see.

Passing Game
The running game has been put in place to protect and help the new QB. With the starting roll for the QB spot still up for grabs, I am very interested in who will be the starter. Bucs are leaning towards Leftwich being the starter on opening day, and I am thinking we might see the rookie Freeman before the end of the season if Leftwich does not preform up to par. With the scenario of Leftwich starting, who is he going to pass it to? Well, the two wide receivers that will be the main target are Bryant and Clayton. The biggest part of the puzzle to make this offense click, is the addition of TE
Kellen Winslow. Do not expect a WOW passing game this year, instead be ready for safe short yardage passing with the mind set of not turning over the ball.

Defense
With only 6 players from 2008 returning, a new defensive coordinator and a new scheme, this will be the most exciting change! Bucs have been defending with the boring 'cover two' going way back to the Dungy days, this will no longer be the case. You can expect to see a really aggressive approach with hard hitting, and tons of blitz packages. The defensive players will have to really bring their A game every Sunday to make this new defense work. Overall, this change is exciting.Be ready to see physical football, sacks and unfortunately, they will show a large amount of mistakes during this adjustment period.

Overview
With an overall change to the team it will be tough, to impossible for the Bucs to win the Superbowl. On top of the changes, the Bucs have what is said by experts to be the 5th most difficult schedule in the league. If the new Bucs style works, we will see good hard played football, where the battles will be won in the trenches. Winning games on the ground and take advantage of the turn over ratios. By going back to the basics and no fancy crap, post season is not out of the question!

It is very early and there is a lot of time until the start of the season. This is the NFL and everything can change quickly! Please feel free to add or correct anything in this posting in the comment form below.
